Colorectal cancer typically develops from adenomatous polyps—small, benign growths in the lining of the colon or rectum. Over time, some of these polyps can become cancerous due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Risk factors include:
Age: Most cases are diagnosed in individuals over 50, although rates among younger adults are increasing.
